Hair & Beauty Official CPD Register (HBOCR) is the Official CPD Register for the entire UK Hair & Beauty industry. It was created to enhance, continue and maintain robust standards across the various sectors of this industry. It is a fundamental part of being a professional to undertake Continuing Professional Development (CPD).  Along with ‘on the job learning’, CPD helps to ensure your competence over the course of your career. It is widely recognised that making visible an individual’s CPD has wide-reaching benefits, and those extend far beyond the individual.

The register is open to all professionals who operate within the industry and who meet the standards for publishing their CPD. Additionally, on this website you will find an invaluable resource guide for training courses and providers. Furthermore, there are loads of personal benefits in terms of offers and specially negotiated rates for things like insurance, equipment and materials.

We have designed this site to be very user-friendly and ultra-secure, once registered you can upload and maintain information about yourself, this is accessed via a secure personalised login. Each registrant is invited to create an online CPD portfolio, here you can showcase your skills, professional achievements and awards along with your ongoing CPD portfolio of learning.

The register also has an ‘open portal’, essentially this means employers, clients and alike can view information about people who are registered, information is in the form of text, images and dates. This is an invaluable guide, as these entities want and need trained and skilled professionals they can trust. There are various search facilities and an intuitive map feature allows people to find you quickly.

What is CPD?

CPD is a combination of approaches, ideas and techniques that will help you manage your own learning and growth. The focus of CPD is firmly on results – the benefits that professional development can bring you in the real world. Perhaps the most important message is that one size doesn’t fit all. Wherever you are in your career now and whatever you want to achieve, your CPD should be exactly that: yours.

We're not concerned with how much time you spend on training courses or how many boxes you tick on a form. CPD is about capturing useful experiences and assessing the practical benefits of what you have learned. There is one decisive question that you should ask yourself to evaluate every piece of learning: what can you do now that you couldn't do before? Similarly, when you record your CPD, it’s the value of the activity that counts. It’s not what you did, but how you can now use what you learned.

How do I get started?

We recommend you review your learning over the previous 12 months and set your development objectives for the coming year. Reflecting on the past and planning for the future in this way makes your development more methodical and easier to measure. You may already be doing this as part of your development review with an employer.

There is a set of questions we use when asking you to provide evidence of your CPD. Answering these will help you explore the pattern of your past and planned learning, with the emphasis firmly on the impact of that learning.

How should I present my CPD?

Some people find it helpful to write things down in detail, while others record 'insights and learning points' in their diaries as they go along. This helps them to assess their learning continuously. These records and logs are useful tools for planning and reflection: it would be difficult to review your learning and learning needs yearly without regularly recording in some way your experiences.

We don’t provide rigid templates or lay down restrictive rules, either for planning or recording your development activity. You’ll find examples on our website, but that’s all they are – you don’t have to follow them. As long as you clearly identify the practical value of the things you’ve learned, you can do whatever suits you. The thing to remember is that records and logs are tools for planning and reflection. CPD is what you experience, learn and then apply.

You can also record your CPD online where you create, view and edit your record and plan in your 'My Profile' area.

Why is CPD important?

It is a fundamental part of being a professional to undertake CPD.  Along with ‘on the job learning’, CPD helps to ensure your competence over the course of your career.  Whilst it is acknowledged that a certain amount of learning can be achieved ‘on the job’, it is widely recognised that regular formal education and training is necessary to supplement and enhance such learning.

Key benefits of Continuing Professional Development

  • Those who take a planned approach to skills development tend to move up the career ladder more quickly and in a direction of their choosing. Planning CPD in advance means that it is more likely to be relevant to your working life.
  • A record of CPD can provide evidence of competence – to draw upon for reviews, promotions, interviews and, when necessary, regulatory requirements.
  • CPD allows the industry to demonstrate that all members and at each level are competent and keeping their knowledge and skills up-to-date.
  • CPD should provide you with the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values that you need to have to perform effectively and competently in your role and to meet the expectations placed on you by your employers, colleagues and others who are registered on HBOCR
  • CPD can add to the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values that you already have.  There is always a need to learn and develop – age, seniority, expertise and unemployment are not barriers to undertaking CPD
